What exactly is an embryo and How are embryos created and fertilized in IVF?

My IVF Journey: Honoring the Path, Finding Peace & Embracing Family in Buffalo, NY

The IVF journey can feel never-ending—and after a year of struggles trying to grow our family beyond our two wonderful boys, I faced a difficult but necessary decision. Earlier this year, I underwent a partial hysterectomy, a choice that was deeply personal and emotional, and one where I signed away my childbearing rights to New York State. It was a strange, surreal step, but I stand believing our family is complete with my two boys, whom we worked so hard for.

I know this journey isn’t easy for everyone, and not all dreams unfold as we hope. If you’re faced with similar struggles, please be kind to yourself and your body. Set emotional boundaries and goals. Remember, motherhood can take many forms—and when it’s meant to be, it will happen, however that path looks for you.

My recovery was tough—long weeks of rest, no lifting, and the balancing act of caring for a 1- and 4-year-old. The boys were amazing, and my husband was my rock. Even now, seven months out, my body is still healing, but I’m hopeful and learning what medication and therapies help me most. I’d be glad to share more about what works when I feel ready, but I know each IVF experience is unique.

One other important decision we made was to donate our frozen embryos back to Buffalo IVF for scientific study. It was tough, but necessary for my health and peace of mind, as I can no longer carry a pregnancy. The controversial topics around embryos being called babies or destroyed can be painful to navigate. From my six years undergoing IVF and the two beautiful children I have, I know that not every embryo implants or becomes a baby. An embryo needs all the right conditions and health to develop, and many simply don’t make it despite our hopes.

I also want to share a personal belief that an embryo is not truly a baby until it implants and begins to develop in the womb. That’s why I have two beautiful children, not twelve —because my body didn’t respond to all of the embryos placed in me. Having help to get pregnant through IVF does not make their arrival any less special; they are still gifts from God. My path to motherhood may have looked different than that of a woman who conceives naturally, but it was exactly the journey meant for me.

To those walking this path or supporting loved ones: your feelings are valid. Your journey is real. And every choice you make is filled with courage.

Our family calls Buffalo and Western New York home, and sharing this part of my story is my way of helping others know they’re not alone.
